What do you know ABOUT lower back pain?
Your lower back is involved in literally EVERY action or posture you execute, no matter how big or small. Even the simple act of lifting your arm to reach for an object demands effort from muscles spanning the whole spine, that act on dozens of joints, tugging and pulling on countless ligaments. It is for this reason that any kind of back condition, mild or severe, can be quite debilitating.
Even a mild form of back injury can stop you in your tracks and have you questioning, “will I ever be the same again?”. It is for this reason that back pain is one of the top 3 reasons for seeking medical care.
THE PROBLEM? Traditional medicine has no good answers for back pain!
What’s CAUSING your lower back pain?
There are a number of tissues that can be responsible for your pain in the back. Figuring out WHAT hurts can give us insight into HOW you hurt your back (and vice versa).
Most common sources of lower back pain:
Facet Joints
The facet joints can be irritated and injured with unchecked movements and straining postures. Pain associated with this injury is often local, and can range from dull and achy, to sharp and severe. Bending backwards (arching your lower back) is often irritating.
Muscle Tension/Strain
Prolonged muscle tension or a strain can be the source of debilitating pain.
In mild forms, this can present as local stiffness and soreness. More severe injuries can induce local muscle spasms and even radiate pain lower down, into the buttock and leg.
Spinal Discs
You may have heard of the term “slipped disc” as a source of pain. Contrary to that belief, discs cannot “slip” out, but that does not mean that they cannot be a significant source of pain.
Spinal discs become vulnerable to injury with proloned slouching postures and repetitive and/or loaded low back bending movements.
A mild disc injury can present itself as a nagging local pain at the lowest part of the back, particularly when sitting or bending forward. More severe disc injuries can inflame local nerves and cause unrelenting pain down the leg combined with numbness and weakness (see SCIATICA)
Rest assured, as debilitating as back pain can be, it can be very effectively managed without the use of medication or surgery!
