Sciatica is a pain in the… nerve
But it is so much more than that!
Sciatica can present as:
A dull throb in your buttock and thigh
Pain with numbness and tingling in the leg
Sharp and electric pain down the leg
What you need to know about sciatica
No matter how your symptoms present, sciatica can humble even the toughest people, affecting all areas of life. It makes your work life difficult, your rest and sleep uncomfortable, and it significantly affects your leisure activities and time with your family.
An accurate diagnosis is KEY
Sciatica can be caused by a number of things. Each CAUSE is very different, requiring a specific sciatica treatment, which is why it is so important to have an accurate diagnosis.
The 3 most common causes of sciatica are:
- Lumbar disc herniation
- Degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis
- Piriformis syndrome

LUMBAR DISC HERNIATION:
Injury to the discs in between the lumbar vertebrae can create mechanical pressure and chemical irritation to the nerves as they exit the lumbar spine. This will cause pain down the sciatic nerve which may be accompanied by numbness and weakness.
DEGENERATIVE LUMBAR SPINAL STENOSIS:
Advanced degenerative changes of the disc and spine may encroach on the sensitive spinal nerves as they exit the spine, creating pain and nerve symptoms down one or both legs. The symptoms are exacerbated by prolonged standing, walking or arching the low back, with relief while sitting slouched or bending over.
As the sciatic nerve exits the pelvis and makes its way down the leg, it travels closely past (and sometimes through) the piriformis muscle. Pressure exerted on the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle can lead to sciatica.
**Certain conditions may also mimic symptoms of sciatica. All potential differential diagnoses need to be considered when planning the most appropriate treatment**
NO-NONSENSE SCIATICA TREATMENT
Even though sciatica can put just about anyone’s life on hold and make them feel helpless, the good news is that most cases of sciatica can be managed effectively, without the use of medication or surgery.
