Registered Massage Therapy in Burlington
MORE THAN RELAXATION
Massage therapy at Propel Active Health & Lifestyle is clinical first. That doesn't mean it isn't relaxing — it often is. But every session starts with an assessment of your symptoms, movement, and goals, and the treatment that follows is chosen specifically for what your body needs, not a standard formula.
Our Burlington registered massage therapist brings specialized training in sports massage, TMJ treatment, and pregnancy massage — areas that go well beyond what most massage therapy clinics in Burlington offer.

What Registered Massage Therapy at Propel Includes
Depending on your condition and goals, your RMT session at Propel may use any combination of the following techniques:
Swedish massage — flowing, rhythmic strokes to improve circulation, reduce tension, and promote full-body relaxation. Particularly effective for stress, general muscle soreness, and recovery between training sessions.
Deep tissue massage — targeted work in deeper muscle layers and connective tissue to address chronic tension, adhesions, and restricted mobility. Pressure is always adjusted to your comfort level.
Trigger point therapy — specific pressure applied to hypersensitive points within muscle tissue that refer pain to other areas. Effective for headaches, jaw pain, and regional pain patterns that haven't responded to other approaches.
Myofascial release — gentle, sustained pressure into the fascial system to release restrictions that limit movement and contribute to chronic pain.
Lymphatic drainage — a gentle, rhythmic technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to reduce swelling, clear metabolic waste, and support immune function. Particularly beneficial for post-surgical recovery, injury-related edema, and patients dealing with chronic inflammation or fluid retention.
Relaxation massage — a lighter-pressure, full-body approach focused on nervous system down-regulation, stress reduction, and overall well-being. Effective for patients managing anxiety, sleep disruption, or chronic stress patterns.
Assisted stretch therapy — clinician-guided stretching techniques to restore range of motion, release chronic muscle tension, and improve mobility beyond what massage alone can achieve. At Propel, assisted stretch therapy is delivered by your registered massage therapist and
billed directly under your massage therapy benefit.
Specialized Areas of Massage Therapy at Propel
Sports Massage
Propel's registered massage therapist has a particular clinical interest in sports massage — the application of targeted soft tissue techniques to support athletic performance, accelerate recovery, and address sport-specific overuse patterns. Unlike a standard deep tissue massage applied to an active person, sports massage at Propel is informed by a genuine understanding of how different sports load the body, where overuse injuries develop, and what the tissue needs at different points in the training cycle.
Runners and cyclists make up a significant portion of our sports massage patients — and for good reason. Both sports place repetitive, high-volume demand on specific muscle groups, creating tightness, compensation patterns, and tissue fatigue that accumulate over a training block. Many of our athletes use sports massage as a performance tool, not just a recovery one — booking a pre-race session to prime the muscles and nervous system for competition, and a post-race session to accelerate tissue recovery and get back to training sooner. Whether you're preparing for a marathon, a gran fondo, or your next hard training week, sports massage at Propel is built around your specific demands — not a generic protocol.
TMJ Treatment — Facial and Intra-Oral Massage
Propel's registered massage therapist has a particular clinical interest in treating temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction — the jaw pain, clicking, headaches, and facial tension that affect a significant number of people and are often undertreated. Our RMT uses both external facial massage techniques and intra-oral massage of the pterygoid muscles — muscles inside the mouth that directly influence jaw mechanics and are a primary driver of TMJ pain. This combination is one of the most effective manual therapy approaches for TMJ dysfunction and is rarely available outside of a specialized clinic. Learn more about Propel's TMJ treatment program.
Pregnancy Massage
Massage therapy is an integral part of Propel's pregnancy care program. Our RMT provides pregnancy massage throughout all trimesters using appropriate positioning and modified techniques to ensure safety and comfort. Pregnancy massage addresses the muscle tension, circulatory changes, postural strain, hip tightness, and lower back pain that are common as pregnancy progresses. Postpartum massage is also available to support recovery after delivery.
Conditions Treated With Massage Therapy at Propel
Studies show that massage therapy significantly reduces cortisol levels and muscle tension — and its effects on chronic pain, anxiety, and recovery are well-documented in clinical literature. Our Burlington registered massage therapist works with patients experiencing:

- Pregnancy-related muscle discomfort and postural pain

What to Expect at Your First Massage Therapy Appointment
Your first RMT session at Propel begins with a brief intake — your therapist will ask about your symptoms, health history, and what you're hoping to get out of treatment. This takes about 5–10 minutes and informs the approach for the rest of your session. Treatment time is maximized from your very first visit. You'll be asked about pressure preference throughout, and your therapist will adjust technique based on how your tissue responds.
Massage Therapy as Part of Your Integrated Care Plan
At Propel Active Health & Lifestyle, massage therapy works alongside chiropractic, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation — not just as a standalone service in isolation. When your condition involves multiple tissue types or treatment disciplines, your RMT will coordinate with the other providers on your care team. This is particularly effective for complex presentations like chronic neck and jaw pain, post-surgical recovery, and sports injuries, where soft tissue health is a rate-limiting factor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral for massage therapy in Burlington?
No. You can book directly with our registered massage therapist without a referral from your doctor.
Is massage therapy covered by insurance?
Yes. Most extended health benefit plans in Ontario cover registered massage therapy when performed by an RMT. At Propel, we bill your insurance directly — no forms, no upfront payment.
What's the difference between a registered massage therapist and other massage providers?
A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in Ontario has completed a minimum of 2,200 hours of training and is regulated by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO). This regulation means RMTs are trained to assess and treat musculoskeletal conditions, not just provide relaxation services — and it's what makes your sessions eligible for insurance billing.
Can massage therapy help with TMJ and jaw pain?
Yes — and this is an area of particular clinical focus at Propel. Our RMT uses both external facial massage and intra-oral techniques targeting the pterygoid muscles to address jaw mechanics directly. This approach is significantly more targeted than standard massage and is often effective for patients who haven't found relief through other treatments.
How often should I come for massage therapy?
It depends on your goals and condition. Patients recovering from an injury or managing chronic pain often benefit from weekly or bi-weekly sessions initially. Maintenance and performance-focused patients typically come monthly. Your RMT will recommend a schedule based on your response to treatment.
Can massage therapy be combined with my other treatments at Propel?
Yes — and it's often more effective when it is. Massage therapy is frequently combined with chiropractic, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation at Propel for conditions involving both joint and soft tissue dysfunction. Your providers will coordinate your care directly.
Can a registered massage therapist perform assisted stretch therapy as a standalone service?
Yes. At Propel, assisted stretch therapy is offered as a standalone service delivered by our registered massage therapist. Because it's performed by an RMT, it's billed directly under your massage therapy extended health benefit — meaning no separate coverage category, no additional paperwork.
Can I combine assisted stretch therapy with massage therapy in the same appointment?
Yes — and many patients find this combination particularly effective. Your RMT can split your appointment time between hands-on massage and assisted stretching based on what your body needs that day. For example, a 60-minute session might include soft tissue work targeting areas of tension followed by assisted stretching to reinforce the mobility gains from the massage. The entire session is billed as a single massage therapy appointment under your extended health benefit.
Direct insurance billing available. No referral required. Serving Burlington and surrounding communities, including Oakville, Hamilton, Milton, and Waterdown.
